Vitamin A is a family of fat-soluble compounds that has many important benefits, the most famous being that it helps us see better. Vitamin A helps keep the cornea moist and protects if from damage. It is common to relate Vitamin A to good night vision, which is perhaps where the value is most noticeable. Vitamin A also plays a vital role in bone growth, reproduction, cell division, and cell differentiation (in which a cell is given the properties of what it will become).
Vitamin A helps protect against disease by regulating the immune system, which helps prevent or fight off infections. Vitamin A assist in making white blood cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. Vitamin A also may help lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, fight infections more effectively.
Vitamin A promotes healthy surface linings of the eyes and the respiratory, urinary, and intestinal tracts. When those linings break down, it becomes easier for bacteria to enter the body and cause infection. Vitamin A is also helpful in maintaining healthy hair and skin and has also been linked to decreased risk of breast, lung and skin cancer.
